Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
